at the entrance to an unfamiliar cinema. 

The lights are off in the booth; 

all the tickets for the final film have been sold.

She is done with walking now.

that might be the last one of the night.

지나치게 강한 에어컨 바람에.

The moment she steps up on to the bus, 

she is startled 

by the incredibly strong air conditioning.

She walks down the aisle

to where there is an empty double-seat.

버스는 거리를 가로지르고 있다,

The bus is cutting through the streets of the city, 

which is lit up all night. 

Muffins and slices of cake in various colours

are displayed 

in the clear-glass fridges

of dazzlingly illuminated cafés. 

모조 다이아몬드 목걸이가 빛난다,

문을 닫은 보석점 진열장 안에서. 

A fake-diamond necklace glitters 

in the display case of a jewellery shop closed for the night.

초등학교 시절에 만들었던

만화경을 그녀는 기억한다. 

세 조각의 직사각형 거울을 잇대어,

거울집에서 잘라온.

She remembers the kaleidoscope

she made in primary school.

She joined three rectangular pieces of a mirror,  

which she’d had cut in a mirror shop, 

그리고 삼각기둥을 만든 뒤

색종이를 가위로 잘게 잘라 

그 안에 넣었다. 

to make a triangular prism, 

then scissored coloured paper into tiny pieces

and put them inside. 

그녀는 단박에 사로잡혔다,

그 안에서 펼쳐지는 이상한 세계에. 

한쪽 눈에 갖다 대고 

만화경을 흔들 때마다 펼쳐지던. 

She was instantly captivated 

by the strange world that 펼쳤다 inside

each time she held one end up to her eye 

and shook the kaleidoscope.

말을 잃은 뒤 그럴 때가 있다, 

이따금 그 세계가 그녀의 눈앞에 떠올라

이미 거기 있던 장면에 겹쳐지는.

After losing words, there were times 

when that world rose up in front of her eyes,  

overlaying whatever scene was already there. 

지금처럼 녹초가 된 채

버스에 실려 

검고 단단한 숲 같은 밤거리를 흘러갈 때.

When, exhausted as she was now, 

a bus bore her 

through the night streets’ 단단한 black forest.

아카데미 건물의 어둡고

좁은 계단을 걸어 올라갈 때. 

강의실에 이르는

어둡고 긴 복도를 지나갈 때. 

When walking up the dark,

narrow stairs of the academy building. 

When passing down the long corridor

that led to the classroom. 

오후의 햇빛과

정적과 나무들, 잎사귀들, 

그 틈의 노란빛 무늬들을 바라볼 때. 

When gazing at afternoon sunlight,

quiet and trees, leaves, 

the patterns of yellow light between them.

말을 잃고 나자 그 모든 풍경이 파편이 되었다,

조각조각이 따로 떨어져 분리된.

ㅡ만화경 속의 색종이처럼

조용히 반복적으로 움직이며 

일제히 무늬를 바꾸던. 

Once she lost words, all such scenery became fragmented, 

each piece distinct and 분리된

ㅡlike the coloured paper inside the kaleidoscope, 

shifting silently, repeatedly 

and in concert to form new patterns. 

그때 그녀의 아이는 여섯 살이었다.

딱 한 번 한가했던 일요일 오전, 

이런저런 이야기 끝에

Her son was six.

For once it was a leisurely Sunday morning, 

and, after an aimless conversation,

she suggested to him

based on what natural thing they most resembled. 

아이는 재미있어하며 

자신의 이름을 ‘반짝이는 숲’이라고 지은 뒤

Her son liked the idea, 

claimed ‘Sparkling Forest’ for himself, 

then named her too. 

Decisively, as though it fitted her exactly.
