피로를 느끼며 그녀는 오랫동안 눈을 감았다가

다시 뜬다.

피로한, she closes her eyes for a long moment 

before opening them again. 

지금 자신이 이곳에 있다는 사실이

실감되지 않는다. 

다시 눈을 감자

의식이 훌쩍 생시로부터 밀려나가려 한다. 

That she is here, now,

does not feel real. 

When she closes her eyes again, 

her consciousness tries to ebb away from her waking life.

이제 눈을 뜨면 

자신의 집 거실 천장이 시야에 가득 찰지도 모른다. 

그녀는 내내 잠들어 있었던 것인지도 모른다,

언제나처럼 거실 소파에 웅크려 누워. 

If she were to open her eyes now, 

she might see the ceiling of her own living room. 

She might have been asleep all this time, 

curled up in her usual spot on the living-room sofa.

여러 시간 전, 

삼십여 분 정도를

그녀는 아무도 없는 강의실에서

수업이 시작되기를 기다리며

이 비슷한 혼란을 느꼈었다. 

Several hours ago, 

during the thirty or so minutes 

when she had waited in the empty classroom 

for the lesson to begin, 

she had felt a similar confusion. 

언제나 먼저 와서 

학생들을 기다리던 희랍어 강사는

어째서인지 나타나지 않았다. 

The Greek lecturer, who always arrived early

and waited for the students,

hadn’t appeared for some reason. 

다른 학생들도 아무도 오지 않았다.

Nor had any of the other students.

그녀의 시간이 어긋난 것 같았다,

다른 모든 사람들의 시간과.

암석들의 단층처럼

날카롭게 어긋나

Time as it was for her seemed out of joint

with how it was for everyone else. 

날카롭게 dislocated,

like a fault line in a rocky crag, 

다시는 그녀의 시간이 그들의 시간과 

겹쳐질 수 없을 것 같았다. 

so that the two temporalities 

might never again coincide. 

우두커니 귀를 기울이다 

아득하게 들려오는 차량들의 엔진 소리에

그녀는 교재와 

공책과 헝겊 필통을 도로 가방에 밀어 넣었다. 

Blankly listening

to the muffled sound of traffic, 

she had packed her textbook, 

notebook and cloth pencil case back into her bag. 

정적에 잠긴 강의실에 불을 켜둔 채

어두운 복도로 걸어나갔던 것이다.

신발이 바닥에 닿으며 유난히 큰 소리를 냈다.  

Leaving the lights on in the silent classroom, 

she had walked out into the dark 복도, 

her shoes ringing out unusually loudly against the floor.

남자) 내 말 거기서 듣고 있나요?

Are you listening over there?

그의 음성이 변형되어 들린다,

습기로 축축해진 스피커에서 나오는 것처럼. 

His voice sounds transformed, 

like something coming out of a speaker muffled by 축축한 air.

눈을 감은 채 

그녀는 저 음성이 희랍어 강사의 음성인가, 의심한다. 

With her eyes closed, 

she 의심하다 whether the voice is that of the Greek lecturer. 

그의 음성이 맞나?

수개월 동안 그 적막한 강의실에서 들어온.

저렇게 연약하게 떨리는 음성이었나?

Does it match the voice 

she’s heard these many months in the desolate classroom? 

Had that voice been so frail, so tremulous?

남자) 가끔 이상하게 느껴지지 않나요?

Do you ever wonder at the strangeness of it?

남자) 우리 몸에 눈꺼풀과 입술이 있다는 건.

That our bodies have eyelids and lips,

Josh: In my 3rd year of University I was waiting outside the classroom for our professor and I was the only student out of 300 waiting.

대학교 3학년 때였는데, 300명 중에 나 혼자 강의실 앞에서 교수님을 기다리고 있었거든.

Eventually, after waiting 15 minutes, a girl was walking by and told me classes were canceled.

15분 정도 기다리고 나니까 어떤 여학생이 지나가면서 그 수업이 취소됐다고 얘기해 주더라고.

I felt foolish.

정말 바보 같았지.

Turns out she was in the class after mine and that’s why she knew.

알고 보니까 그 여학생은 내 수업 다음 시간 수업을 듣는 학생이었던 거야.

We went and had tea and studied together that afternoon.

그래서 그날 오후에 같이 차 마시고 공부하면서 보냈어.

 

Kate: Sounds like you had a meet-cute!

영화처럼 운명적인 첫 만남 같네!

All in all, not a bad thing you showed up to that cancelled class. 

결국 수업이 취소됐던 게 나쁘지만은 않았구나.

 

Josh: Thinking back, Kate, have you ever been the only one to show up to a class or meeting?

케이트, 돌이켜 생각해 보면 수업이나 회의에 혼자 참석했던 적 있어?

If so, what did you do then?

있다면, 그때 어떻게 했어?

 

Kate: That never happened to me,

절대 그런 적이 없어.

because I would always make sure I share the same classes with my friends.

왜냐하면 항상 친구들이랑 같은 수업을 수업을 들었거든.

I would always be informed in advance by my friends and if I’m the first person to know about a cancellation, then I would let my friends know.

그래서 수업이 취소되면 항상 친구들이 미리 알려주거나 내가 먼저 알게 되면 친구들에게 알려주기도 했지.

See? It’s a win-win! 

봐봐, 서로 좋지!

 

Josh: Sounds like a perfect system.
